A HAUNTED GIRL’s depiction of a young woman struggling with major depression resonates with readers because it is authentic and relatable — and because major depression is surprisingly common. Did you know that over 8% of adult Americans (21 million people) are affected by major depression each year? Sometimes, however, getting help can feel like a challenge.
Would you ignore a broken bone or a respiratory virus? Probably not, but many of us overlook mental health issues that are just as urgent — like major depression. Fear and shame can keep us from speaking up about our mental health, and sometimes, we’re unaware that we’re struggling until other areas of our life are affected. Seeking help is a sign of strength, not a sign of weakness. It’s okay not to be okay — and it’s okay to seek help, if needed.
In 2023, the American Psychiatric Association Foundation (APAF) launched a public awareness and literacy campaign, Mental Health Care Works, to encourage Americans to take the first step in pursuing mental wellness. Visit mentalhealthcareworks.org to find stories of recovery that you can relate to, guidance on speaking with your doctor about potential mental health concerns, and information on different types of mental health care.
The Mental Health Care Works movement shares free resources from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. No matter what your mental health concerns are or how they affect your life, help is available — and it works.
